I loved the prologue of the book, and it grabbed my attention from the very beginning. The main character of the story, Violet, finds out that she can sense the dead with things called echos since she was a child. Echos are feelings, visions, tastes, smells, and sounds that are associated with the death of individuals. She had known about her power for a while but had only found dead animals until she stumbled upon the body of a dead girl in the forest. The prologue ends very quickly and goes onto the next chapter when she is older. I liked the dramatic ending of the prologue when she finds, "the girl's face staring up at her from beneath the soil."(Derting, 4) and builds up such a big feeling until you turn the page and the energy stops which created a great effect while I was reading.
