Chapter 5
After finding the body in the lake, Violet is surrounded by police and firemen. They bring her both comfort and torment. She feels safe with them there, but these people are much more likely to have an echo attached to them because of their line of work. Her parents try to comfort her anyways, after having thrown up twice and now sitting at the back of an ambulance with an itchy blanket around her. She and Jay had to give their account of how they found the body. Violet relied on the words, "Coincidence. Chance," They were the only way to explain what had happened without giving away her secret. But even through all of the madness, Violet finds the time to admire Jay. As he gets into her uncle's police car for a ride home, he finds himself asking if he can turn on the siren, which Violet thinks to be adorable. She rides home with her dad and she begins to tell him what happened. She starts crying and her dad comforts her by saying he is sorry about what had happened and how her parents had tried to discourage her from using her skill when she was little, but nothing did. She has to accept this "skill" and learn to work around it.
